Abstract
The Revolt of 1857, also known as the First Indian War of Independence, the Sepoy Mutiny and the Indian Rebellion, was an armed rebellion against British rule. The rebellion lasted for two years in different regions of India. This rebellion started with small skirmishes and arson in the cantonment areas but by January it took a big form. The revolt ended with the end of the East India Company's rule in India, and the direct rule of the British crown over the whole of India began for the next 90 years.
