Abstract

Historically, land issues and the caste system have been intertwined in traditional rural India. The growth and assertiveness of caste and community politics in Uttar Pradesh was the result of a failure to promote adequate and equitable economic growth and a weakness in the centralized framework of governance and policy processes. Even in Azamgarh district, the nature of agricultural relations is unequal between the upper and lower castes from the past. After independence, the process of democratic decentralization and various state initiatives have improved the condition of the marginalized section of the society and Azamgarh district has witnessed significant changes regarding land and caste. This article discusses the impact of land reforms and other state initiatives on the lower caste (SC) of Azamgarh district. The findings reflect the changing status of the lower caste and the changing agrarian relations with various state initiatives.
