Abstract

Sumit Sarkar's approach to situations is objective and scientific. In fact, the social and economic concepts of Gandhiji's self-rule set such an ideal that it required rigorous sacrifice and penance and demanded a long period of time when the people were neither sacrificing nor wanting to give time. This was the reason that despite Gandhi's appeal for non-violence and satyagraha, many violent movements took place during these years. The spontaneous rebellion of the lower classes in many areas inadvertently arose from the non-cooperation movement did not calm down with the withdrawal of the Bardoli movement. For example, the 'Ek' movement of Barabanki was causing trouble to the authorities of the United Provinces even as of March 1922, and peace was not fully established until July in Tipara and Chittagong districts of Bengal. However, the most significant evidence of the continuation of the mass struggle was found in the Rampa area north of Godavari, where Alluri Sitaram Raju virtually waged a guerrilla war between August 1922 and May 1924. Sitaram Raju was indeed a remarkable man who became a Loknayak in Andhra, but remained almost unknown elsewhere.
