Abstract

Despite being a fascinating and well-read poet of Hindi, Shamsher is a poet on whom less has been written, compared to other poets of his contemporaries, little has been talked about. Now, it may also be that Shamsher's poetic sensuality may have been the reason. However, the critical anxieties that work in attempts to understand the new poetry of Hindi are fueled by the urge to pre-determine things such as atmosphere and ideologies about any poet. At the same time, it is a little difficult to do with Shamsher, as soon as you create a frame in your mind while reading his poem, the next line of the poem will be seen destroying that frame. If we keep the poetic experience at the center, it is to a great extent Markey's point that reading Shamsher is like taking a fluid journey in the boat of his language. A journey that does not tell us exactly where to reach, but the experiences of that journey are imperceptible. Along with remembering Shamsher as an impressionist, a romanticist, a connoisseur, a post-shadowist, an eccentric or charming poet, it is more important to remember him as an honest poet immersed in loneliness.
