Abstract

The period from 1917 to 1947 has been called the most important and peak period of the Indian independence movement. In 1917, Gandhiji started the Satyagraha movement against the British from Champaran in Bihar. This is the first Satyagraha movement in India under the leadership of Gandhiji. At that time Gandhiji came to India from Africa after succeeding in the Satyagraha movement. The credit for calling Gandhiji to Champaran goes to Raj Kumar Shukla. The story is that in Champaran, under the three kathia law by the Nilaha Sahibs on the farmers cultivating indigo in Champaran, the law was going on to transfer the produce of one kattha to the British's kothi. On not giving, Nilaha Saheb used to harass, oppress and exploit, against which discontent was emerging among the farmers.
