Abstract

In the history of Hindi story, a new debate started from around the attainment of independence, in which some differently written stories and new storytellers were involved. The story-telling technique that this debate developed was later known as the new story. The beginning of the New Story movement was influenced by the ongoing New Story movement in the West, which has also been accepted by many critics. Whatever be the reason, no one can deny the fact that the sixth decade of Hindi story was known in Hindi as Nai Kahani movement. There were considerable debates in Hindi criticism regarding the tendencies of the new story, its epoch-making, its structure and above all its narrative form. Critic Namvar Singh, who gave centrality to these debates, says that – “While considering today’s story, the first question that arises in my mind is whether there is such a thing as a ‘Nai Kahani’ like a ‘Nai Kavita’. ? And we find that there is no movement called 'Nai Kahani' yet. What is to be understood by this? That there is no newness in the story, that the novelty that has come in the story is much less than that of the poem, that this newness is not very evident in the development of the story itself, that it is an attempt to separate the novelty of the story like poetry. It did not happen, that the old tendencies in the field of story are no longer residuary, which seems to be the need of a new story noun".
