Abstract

Here we will describe some theories of ancient Indian education and perceptions towards it. Elevation of religious attitudes in man, religious belief, character building, personality development, education of civic and social duties, advancement of social virtues and preservation and promotion of culture were the aims and ideals of education in ancient India and its principles. Religion had a special influence in the educational system of the Mahabharata period. In the lives of the students in the Gurukul, devotion, religion, chastity, purity and devotion to labor were there. There are no detailed sources of special theories and ideas on ancient teaching methods. As far as the knowledge of the doctrine is concerned, we get it from the sutras and subhasitas described in the scriptures, the Upanishads and the Mahakavya and the form of the education system.
