Abstract

Gd3+ ion-doped polycrystalline Li3PO4 was synthesized using a modified solid state diffusion technique. Photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy were used to characterize the phosphors. The Li3PO4 phosphor's structure was confirmed by the XRD patterns. Li3PO4:Gd3+ phosphor's photoluminescence spectra reveal emission in the narrow band UVB (NB-UVB) region, which is centered at 313 nm and is caused by the Gd3+ ions' 6P7/2 - 8S7/2 transition. The phosphor may have potential usage in phototherapy due to its acute narrow band UVB emission.
