Effectiveness of Nurse-Led Teaching Programme on Knowledge and Expressed Self-Care Practices among Women with Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: A Pre-Experimental Study

Abstract

Introduction: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common gynecological disorder that adversely affects the physical, psychological, and social well-being of women of reproductive age. Despite its high prevalence, knowledge about the condition and related self-care remains limited. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured nurse-led teaching programme on improving knowledge and expressed self-care practices among women with AUB. Materials and Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was conducted among 60 women aged 18–49 years diagnosed with or showing symptoms of AUB. The participants were selected using a non-probability convenience sampling technique from selected hospitals in district Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. Data were collected using a self-structured knowledge questionnaire and self-care practice checklist. A nurse-led teaching session was conducted, and post-test evaluation was done after one week. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: A significant improvement was observed in the mean post-test knowledge (19.50 ± 2.12) and self-care practice scores (43.23 ± 3.01) compared to pre-test scores (knowledge: 13.15 ± 3.04, self-care: 32.12 ± 4.26), with p < 0.001. Associations were found between post-test knowledge and education level as well as clinical factors like comorbidities. Conclusion: The nurse-led structured teaching programme was effective in enhancing knowledge and promoting self-care practices among women with AUB. Such educational interventions can be integrated into nursing practice to improve reproductive health outcomes.
